The 2009 Hong Kong Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships aims to ensure that vessels, upon being recycled at the end of their operational lives, do not present any unnecessary hazards to human health, safety, nor the environment. This course was designed to assist the student in becoming familiar with the requirements of the 2009 Hong Kong Convention. These requirements are now law, for all vessels over 500GT.
Students will discuss the 2009 Hong Kong Convention, identify various ship classes and the world merchant fleet as well as the location of hazardous materials on a vessel. Students will learn how ship recycling works, discuss sampling process utilized during the IHM process, and identify how to package and transport IHM samples.
